ARE PHYSICALLY ABUSED BY AN INTIMATE PARTNER IN THE UNITED STATES.

Intimate Partner Violence Can Happen in Any Relationship

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a pattern of behaviors used by a current or former partner to gain or maintain power and control. It can affect people of any age, gender, sexual orientation, or relationship status. IPV can include physical, emotional, psychological, sexual, financial, and other forms of abuse. It can occur in dating relationships, marriages, long-term partnerships, or even after a relationship has ended.

If you have experienced intimate partner violence, it is not your fault. You do not have to navigate the next steps alone.

Understanding Intimate Partner Violence

IPV can include:

  • Physical violence or threats

  • Emotional or psychological abuse

  • Sexual coercion or abuse

  • Financial control or exploitation

  • Stalking or intimidation

  • Controlling communication, transportation, or daily activities

  • Technology or social media monitoring

Not all abuse is physical. Patterns of control, intimidation, manipulation, and isolation can also have significant and lasting effects.
